Sugar & Spice Book List

Creating monthly book lists is one of our favorite things to do when putting our sensory kits together! Exposure to books is so important for young children as they build language skills.

We love utilizing our local library to keep our book rotation updated! Below are some of our favorite books to accompany the Sugar & Spice Sensory Kit. We hope you enjoy reading them as much as we do!

This book list is ordered (generally) from youngest readers to oldest readers. But please keep in mind that reading levels and comprehension varies in little readers.

Cookie Truck by Caroline Wright

For the car enthusiasts, this book is all about making a truck out of cookies! This is a wonderful book for littles who are learning their shapes, is the narrator talks through what shape cookie to use for each part of the truck. With a sugar cookie recipe at the end, this book is perfect to read before embarking on your own baking adventure!

Stir Crack Whisk Bake by Maddie Frost

This interactive book brings baking to life as you read! Each page offers readers the opportunity to engage in the process of baking cupcakes from start to finish! This is a super fun to read with all ages and will make you want to head into the kitchen to bake!

Maisy Makes Gingerbread by Lucy Cousins

Follow Maisy around her kitchen on a cozy afternoon while she bakes gingerbread. We love this book because it breaks down every part of the baking process (even washing the dishes)! At the end of the book Maisy gets to share her baking treats with her friends, which is the perfect way to end her baking day!

Baking Day at Grandma’s by Anika Denise

Who doesn’t love a day of making yummy treats with people you love? This sweet (pun intended) book is a rhythmic tale of three little bears as they spend a cozy day baking at Grandma’s house. With a recipe in the back of the book this is the perfect book to read with you little baker(s).

Who Put the Cookies in the Cookie Jar by George Shannon

Before our cookies go in the cookie jar, there are lots of people who have helped make our cookies. From the farmers who grow the wheat to make flour and care for the hens who give us eggs, so many people help make cookies! This book takes you outside of the kitchen to where our food comes from and shows readers just how many people help us when we fill up our cookie jar.

The Cookie Fiasco by Mo Willems and Dan Santat

Part of the Mo Willems series and written by Dan Santat this is the story of four friends who find a plate with only three cookies on it. When hippo starts nervously breaking the cookies in half his friends are horrified until they realize that they when they divide the cookies they can each get and equal portion. A lesson in beginning division as well as the dynamics of friendship, this is a super fun book to read and re-read!

The Gingerbread Man retold by Jim Aylesworth

This classic fairy tale is included in every Fern Sugar & Spice sensory kit! When a gingerbread cookie magically comes to life lots of adventure and mischief ensue! This is a such a familiar story that will be nostalgic to read with your little one and keep coming back to for years to come!

Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett

Another retelling of the story of The Gingerbread Man by our beloved Jan Brett! With beautiful illustrations follow along when the gingerbread baby escapes out the front door a whole parade of people and animals end up chasing him down the road. With a sweet and surprising ending this book is the perfect cozy, winter-time read.

Gingerbread Christmas by Jan Brett

Part of Jan Brett’s Gingerbread Series, we meet the gingerbread baby for another adventure! With a gingerbread band, the gingerbread baby leads the town in a festive parade! When everyone starts to notice the instruments are made out of cookies the gingerbread baby pulls out all the stops to protect his beloved band. This magical story is sure to bring lots of holiday cheer to all who read it!

Gingerbread Friends by Jan Brett

The Gingerbread baby is at it again! When Matty is too busy to play with the gingerbread baby he goes on an adventure to the village to make friends! However, it’s difficult to make friends when more of the other cookies and sweets are inanimate. After a few close calls with animals around the village, the gingerbread baby makes it back home only to find a house full of friends waiting for him!
